Infections put you and your family at risk for a life-threatening condition called sepsis. Sepsis happens when an infection you already have—in your skin, lungs, urinary tract or somewhere else—triggers a chain reaction throughout your body. Sepsis is life-threatening and without timely treatment, it can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death.

Sepsis Basics Prevention: Vaccines
Infection prevention is the only way to prevent sepsis. Fortunately, we can significantly reduce the risk of infection by using prevention measures such as regular hand washing and isolating ourselves if we are ill. Getting vaccines that target certain illnesses is another important way to reduce the risk of contracting infections.

The Rory Staunton Foundation for Sepsis Prevention
This foundation was created by the parents of Rory Staunton, who was 12 when he died of sepsis following a scrape on the elbow while playing basketball. With the goal of reducing sepsis-related deaths, particularly in children, the foundation provides education and outreach that focuses on faster diagnosis and effective treatment of sepsis.
